Rhinoplasty is quite a common form of surgery today. It is no longer a matter of fear or something that involves a huge cost. More and more people are going for such surgeries so as to look more attractive when they see themselves in the mirror and also to correct defects arising out of asymmetricity of the nose, its shape or it’s size. Rhinoplasty is done not just to enhance facial beauty but also due to medical reasons such as birth defects or breathing problems out of cartilage deviation. It comes from the Greek word rhinos meaning nose and plassein, which means to shape.
Rhinoplasty is not a new phenomenon but traces back to Indian medical history in the 500B.C when Sushruta, also known as the father of plastic surgery discovered this form of a surgical procedure. It finds mention in his text Sushruta Samhita. In those times people were punished for crimes by amputing their noses and this kind of a surgery came as a blessing for those unfortunate souls who lost their nose in the process.
In rhinoplasty, there are two techniques, one is the open technique and the other is the closed technique. In both cases an incision is made inside the nostrils. However incase of the open technique of surgery, an additional incision is made across the columella, which is the skin that separates the nostrils. A small invisible scar remains after the surgery incase of open technique. The cartilage is lifted to figure out the cartilage structure of the patient’s nose. However there is also another Nose Job procedure which is non-surgical in nature, known as traditional rhinoplasty. It includes injections such as Botox, Restylane, and Radiesse, which is used to reshape the nose. These processes give quick results with no healing time.
Reportedly, rhinoplasty surgery is done in Iran more than in any other country in the world. Iranians seek plastic surgery like nowhere else in the world. Persian women do not waste any time to show off their new bandaged badge-of-honor noses right after surgery. Some even wear fake bandages just for the show off. Interestingly, women are not the only proponent for cosmetic surgery. Male plastic surgery in Iran is on the rise.
The market for the doctors specializing in nose and other facial plastic surgeries is wonderful. Unfortunately, there has been many botched up plastic surgeries from operations carried out by unqualified physicians. As a result, Iran’s justice ministry has advanced department dealing with these types of malpractice cases. Between 2001 and 2004, about three thousand cases reported, leading to written rebuke and suspensions of numerous doctors.
